The faculty of applied mathematics and physics was found in 1970 when the new specialty "APPLIED MATHEMATICS" appeared. Many branches of new engineering and technology needed engineers-mathematicians who had profound knowledge in mathematics, physics and up-to date computer sciences as well.

The faculty staff consists of 240 persons. Among them there are more than 30 full professors (doctors of sciences) and more than 150 assistant professors (candidates of sciences).
Every year more than 100 students graduate from the faculty with the following specializations.
- Computer Science
- Mathematical modeling in economics
- Information technologies in management and education
- Applying mathematical methods and computers to aerospace engineering and physics
- Numerical methods in problems of aerospace engineering and ecology
The following scientists worked earlier or work now at the faculty: Academicians of RAS V.S. Pugachev,R.F. Ganiev, V.M. Matrosov, Corresponding Members of RAS K.A. Abgaryan and U.G. Pirumov, members of branch academies, the State Prize laureates, the N.I Zhukovskii Prize laureates, the M.V Lomonosov Prize laureates, and laureates of other Prizes.
Educational process and scientific research at the faculty are carried on in co-operation with institutes of Russian Academy of Sciences, branch research institutes and design offices, with leading Russian and foreign universities.
At present time the Dean of the faculty is Prof. P.S. Krasil'nikov. In 1970-1972 the Dean of the faculty was Prof. V.K. Sauliev, in 1972-1977 - Prof. K.A. Abgaryan, in 1977-1992 - Prof. V.G. Veretennikov, in 1992-1999 - Prof. V.N. Seregin.
