The faculty has the best educational and scientific computing base in the institute. This includes up-to-date computers, work stations, and servers integrated into local and global networks equipped with various peripheral devices and present-day software. On the basis of the faculty network, we are creating a computer network that will unite leading Moscow Universities and Academic Institutes. This network is intended to provide high-accurate numerical calculations.
Department and faculty computing laboratories have 13 specialized class-rooms equipped with some 100 IBM-compatible computers and 15 servers and work stations. 50 text, graphic and window terminals are connected to these servers and work stations. Besides, most of students has their own computers.
Faculty computing laboratories have necessary variety and scalability of computer equipment - from UNIX-servers Digital Alpha and work stations Sun and Tektronix to client computers Intel and intellectual terminals.
According to agreements with the companies Microsoft, Digital, Sun, Oracle, our computers are equipped with operation systems Digital UNIX with X Window System, MS Windows, Solaris, Oracle, and other system and applied programs. Moreover, the faculty actively uses freeware GNU, Linux, FreeBSD, Netscape, Java, and educational programs developed by ourselves.
Local computing network of the faculty is a part of fiber-optic campus network Ethernet existing from 1994. It integrates local department networks and provides access to global Moscow network RELARN using a fiber-optic channel for this purpose.
Students of the faculty study computer engineering in the frame of general and special courses of informatics. They carry on laboratory works, course projects, research practice, and original research as well.
